Only about one percent of the population suffers from nut allergies, yet it seems that more and more, peanuts are being treated as though they're as dangerous as asbestos.

The first herb I want to tell you about has an expanding list of health benefits. Its primary claim to fame was treating chronic venous insufficiency. It’s also shown to alleviate asthma, migraines, reduce blood pressure and lower blood sugar levels. I’m talking about Pycnogenol, a proprietary, standardised extract of French maritime pine bark (Pinus pinaster).

If you’ve ever been prescribed calcium supplements to promote healthy bones and prevent colorectal cancer, you should be aware that vitamins, minerals and other nutrients are usually team players.

If you’re a dedicated Health Bytes reader, you’ll know that fermented soy is very good for you. Tempeh, miso, soy sauce (made traditionally) and natto are fermented and rather good for you. But the phytates in unfermented soy products impede the absorption of protein, calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc. These minerals are key if you want to stay healthy.

Have you ever laughed so hard you could hardly catch your breath? That’s what an asthma attack feels like, without the benefits of laughing of course. Asthma can be life threatening, but I have some encouraging news for you that suffer from chronic asthma... It's called sulforaphane.

“It was easier in those days”. I’m sure you’ve heard this before from a parent or grandparent. Unfortunately, progress comes with complications and an immediate example of this is the increase of allergies and asthma in children. Today’s children come into contact with many toxins, some of which are in popular, brand-name baby products including lotions and shampoos.

 

A recent report claims that multivitamins don’t offer women any protection against cancer or heart disease. The report concludes that “multivitamin supplements [have] little or no influence on the risk of cardiovascular disease; and breast, colorectal, endometrial, kidney, bladder, stomach, ovary or lung cancers.” The report claims that women with an adequate diet have little to no reason to take a multi.

I’m beginning to wonder if there’s anything vitamin D can’t do. Research abounds about its positive effects on many health concerns such as heart attacks, Parkinson’s and cancer. The most recent and largest study to date shows that this essential nutrient is a natural fight-all.

I will never forget my mother’s love of cooking and the brilliant presentation of her food. But sometimes as a child I would secretly scrape off the mounds of garnishing from my spaghetti bolognaise because of its bitter taste. Little did I realise that my mother was garnishing the food with a herb with such far reaching benefits!

Thousands of South Africans are on some sort of diet right now. As obesity rates increase, it's no wonder that diet options are everywhere. But many of these so-called solutions can have serious negative effects...
