It’s the time for end of year parties and a pat on the back for those employees who’ve worked hard for you. We had a fantastic party on Friday, which I know made all of us in the FSP fold feel very appreciated.

South Africa, although spared the brunt of the financial collapse most first-world countries are suffering, is also affected. On 27 November, Business Day published a call from The Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa) for a moratorium on retrenchments, which they expect to increase as a result of the global financial crisis. Fedusa general secretary Dennis George said that, according to his federation’s affiliates, several companies in the mining, vehicle, leather and textile industries were embarking on large-scale retrenchments.

You will frequently receive a notice of setdown from the CCMA stating that it will be conducting a con-arb process. What is this and what are your rights? A con-arb is a combination of conciliation and arbitration.  In con-arb,  the CCMA conciliates a dispute and, if it isn’t settled during conciliation, the Commissioner will move straight into arbitration.
