On top of the press reports about changes in the area of labour brokers, the Minister of Labour recently said the Government may increase the period for which retrenched employees can claim unemployment insurance benefits by four months.

Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana says he is “prepared to die” to stop private labour brokers from abusing workers in South Africa. He’s blamed “uncontrollable” labour broking for causing xenophobic violence, farm killings in Kwazulu-Natal and the recent deaths of almost a hundred mine workers in Welkom. Quite an extensive list of offences to lay at one group’s door!

Winter’s officially here. I don’t know about you, but my brain, and body, tends to function in slow motion during these cold months. While some may see this as laziness, I’m convinced it’s a good way to conserve energy.

We all know how important our salaries are. That pay cheque in our bank account each month means we can pay our bills and hopefully have a bit of fun too. It’s important not to forget how useful a tool your salaries and benefits can be in showing employees how valuable they are to your organisation. But...it’s not as simple as: big salary = hard work and loyalty! If you’re a forward-thinking organisation, you need the salary and compensation philosophy to match. This includes ‘quality of work-life’ rewards.
