You may have read last month about the Department of Labour’s drive to inspect all construction companies, particularly those involved in 2010 Fifa projects. This was in an effort to ensure compliance with health and safety laws. It also takes place against the backdrop of Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana’s statement that “...workers’ rights are human rights and that employers should not put profits above safety.”

‘Tis the season for strikes, it seems. Not a week has passed recently without some industry embarking on strike action, whether it’s for its own issues, or in sympathy for another trade union or industry! While I don’t dispute that all recent grievances are not without foundation, I’m sure the CCMA is thoroughly exhausted!
