A friend of mine needs to discipline one of her employees, and had a quick chat to me about how to go about it. I’ll admit I was a bit concerned about the route she was planning to take! I stopped her straight away and warned her of the consequences if she got it wrong.

Some of you will be lucky enough to be on leave on Monday, but there’ll also be a lot of people hard at work. You’ll inevitably have meetings set up and looking at my schedule got me thinking about meeting etiquette. Susanne Biro wrote a very interesting article for www.hrfuture.net on how to be professional. It’s so true that the way you treat meetings is a huge part of how you’re perceived professionally.

The Labour Minister is pushing for labour laws with a bite. He’d like to enforce punishment for labour offences by introducing spot fines for non-compliant employers. Currently there aren’t any fines for breaking the law when dealing with employment equity and the employment of illegal workers.

The Labour Court (LC) regularly hears cases about retirement, and it’s clearly an issue that continues to trouble employers. Make sure you get your process for retirement right.

I’m on leave for a few days before and after Easter (lucky me) and I had a quick look over my calendar to see what I needed to do. I saw I have my quarterly performance appraisal coming up...Now, I’ve never had a reason to worry about them, but like most people, they always put me slightly on edge. However, I know just how vital they are for you and your employees to ensure you’re on the same page, and you’re getting the most out of them. You have to do them, and you have to get them right!
