Money Making Insider Archive March 2009

I am so sick of turning on the TV or opening a newspaper. All you get are media-inspired “doom and gloom” stories about the stinking recession. Now I don’t mean to make light of a serious situation. But that doesn’t mean you should hide your head in the sand and wait for “the good times to roll” again...

There are many ways to get your website viewed, but you have to be careful. Buying what is known as “Guaranteed Traffic” is not a good idea, and generally results in no sales for most businesses. Guaranteed Traffic is usually made up of people who are “paid to surf” or generated with misleading links, pop-unders (which most users hate), and traffic exchanges. This is the worst-quality traffic.

Thanks to property investing, I no longer have to work full-time. If I want to go hiking in the mountains with my dog in the middle of the day, I can. If my husband and I want to pop up to Lesotho to ski, we do it mid-week to avoid the crowds. That’s now. But when we were just starting out as property investors, we had some serious missteps...

"I'll build your website – only R895! Call 800-XXX-XXXX." No, it wasn't the copy for a classified ad or a posting on a freelance job site. It was a "bandit" sign, stuck in a grassy highway divider down the street from my house.

Words are innocent and powerless in themselves, as Nathaniel Hawthorne said, but they become immensely powerful in the mouth of someone who knows how to use them to persuade others to follow his lead. And it doesn't take much. If you improve your speaking skills by just 10%, you will double your personal power.

It all boils down to Michael Masterson’s “Ready, Fire, Aim” philosophy - one that my husband and I subscribe to wholeheartedly. We firmly believe that you need to get going on your dreams. Without taking action, there’s no chance that they will come true.

Your business - whether you are an information marketer, retailer, catalogue merchant, manufacturer, service provider, freelancer, or consultant - has not one but two unique selling propositions (USPs): The tangible and the intangible.

"Let parents bequeath to their children not riches, but the spirit of reverence." Reverence means understanding human limitations. It’s a feeling of respect for what lies beyond our control: nature, truth, fate, death.

Creating first-time customers is one of the costliest things - and the riskiest - that any direct-response business does. And because there are no guarantees that any campaign will work efficiently, every test of every new campaign carries with it a very definite capital risk.
