Tax Bulletin Archive February 2010

I don’t want to bore you with the finer details of Mr Gordhan’s recent budget speech. But I do want to highlight five of the things he mentioned, because they’ll mean higher taxes for you and me.

I caught last week’s episode of Carte Blanche Consumer, which highlighted the fact that filing taxes is still a nightmare for many South African taxpayers. The biggest complaint was that SARS employees are incompetent, and it’s near impossible to get help on tax issues.

Turnover tax is a relatively new tax (it’s only been available to small businesses in South Africa for about a year). SARS implemented this new tax system to try and reduce the administrative burden on small businesses in South Africa.

This past week, SARS announced that it’s expanded its definition of the term ‘handicap’ (with effect from 1 March 2009). People with disabilities (or those who care for them) will be able to claim significant tax deductions on their medical expenses.
