Tax Bulletin Archive March 2010

Hopefully, you’ve spent the last few weeks preparing for the 2010 employer tax season, which occurs from 1 April to 31 May 2010. And hopefully, you're also making your cheques out to SARS correctly too.

I received a query yesterday, about the daily subsistence amounts that employers should pay to employees: “Our employee often travels around the country for work. We cover the cost of his accommodation, and we also pay him a subsistence allowance, for meals and refreshments, etc. How much should we be paying him each day, as a subsistence allowance?”, wrote Mike. And seeing as the SARS Commissioner has just recently increased the daily amount for subsistence allowances, I thought I’d share the news with you too.

On 3 March 2010, you read about the changes to medical aid deductions. I got a lot of responses from you. And it seems there are a lot of doubts and questions around the taxation of these deductions in 2010/2011. I asked our tax expert, Ettiene, to provide some clarity.

Good news for micro-businesses and small businesses wishing to register for tax: the due date for registration has been moved from 1 March 2010, to 30 April 2010. So you have an extra 8 weeks to get your registration applications in order.

The big news this week is the change in taxation of medical aid contributions. From March 2010, the cap amounts no longer apply when calculating income tax fringe benefits, and in particular, the tax on the employer’s contribution.
