3 ways to monitor absenteeism
Labour Bulletin | 8 October, 2009 | Hot Topics:
Absenteeism can cost your company hundreds of thousands of rands every year, even if your employees only take the sick days they’re entitled to. Use these three ways to monitor absenteeism in your company... and identify patterns before they become problems.
Be aware of the warning signs
Some employees will have legitimate reasons for their absence. Some may be genuinely ill.
7 warning signs of absenteeism
1. Deteriorating performance on the job
2. Increased incidences of poor timekeeping
3. Heightened conflict with a manager or colleague
4. Declining morale
5. A perceived lack of opportunity going forward
6. Increase in “home problems”
7. Declining health
Look for patterns of absenteeism
Very often absenteeism follows a pattern (e.g. an employee who’s regularly absent on a Friday or Monday).
Keep accurate records
Keep well-maintained records to easily identify trends and patterns. It’s essential to keep leave records accurate and current. Make sure every employee completes his leave form. It will be very difficult for you to tackle the problem of absenteeism if you don’t have the evidence to back up your case!
Until next time
