Tax Bulletin | 20 April, 2009

PDF versionSend to friendPrinter-friendly version

Dear fellow taxpayer,

In the next few weeks, we’re changing the format of the tax bulletins you’ll be receiving. You’ll still get one a week, with the most up-to-date tax tips and tools, with one very important difference...

4 more tax experts for free!

We’re pooling our expertise. Now, instead of hearing from just one tax expert, you’ll get the benefit of advice from four tax professionals. The name’s also changing: from the 4th of May, keep an eye out for Tax Bulletin, and not Tax Brief.

Hooray for public holidays: but remember your obligations

I for one am very grateful for all the four-day weeks we’ve been enjoying in April, and May and June also have a few long weekends to look forward to. But, don’t forget the rights of your employees who may have to work on these days...

Generally you can’t require an employee to work on a public holiday, unless there’s a written agreement between you both.
If your employee does work on a public holiday, you must pay him double his normal rate. He can also exchange a public holiday for any other day if you agree to it (Section 2(2) of the Public Holidays Act).

Remember: If your employee doesn’t work on public holidays, you must still pay him his ordinary rate for that day.

Remember to vote on Wednesday!

Jackie
