Dear friend,

With the school holidays coming up, many will be escaping the city buzz for a short break. Inevitably, with an increase in traffic, there's an increase in road accidents. So this week, we've looked at what you need to do in the event you're involved in an accident... So you can remain calm and do everything you're supposed to.

----------------------------------------------------------------

6 Crucial things to do if you're ever involved in an accident...

1. Stop. It's a crime not to stop at a scene of an accident. No matter the reason for the accident, remember, it will be much worse if you run and then get identified or caught. For starters, you could be fined R36,000 or be sentenced to nine years in jail.

2. Call for help. If someone is hurt, call emergency services on 084 124 or 10 111.

3. Help if you can. You can also be charged for failing to help someone who is hurt in an accident. So, if you don't know first aid, sit with the person and assure them help is on the way.

4. Handy tip. Keep a notepad, pen and disposable camera in the car. This way, you won't have to scramble for a pen and paper... And you'll be able to produce visual evidence by taking photos. Most cellphones have a camera these days, but few of us would think to use it in an accident because we're in "fight or flight" mode, so it's just easier to keep a disposable camera.

5. Gather important information. Note the full names, ID number, address and telephone numbers of the other person in the accident.

Also get the vehicle details: registration and description. Note the details of the other person's motor insurance.

Get the details of the police, paramedics, tow truck drivers and any witnesses at the scene.

Make a note of the time of the accident, the exact location (including nearest intersection details), make a note of the weather (was it dry/wet, was there sleet etc), make a note of malfunctioning traffic lights, street lights, missing or hidden stop signs.

Lastly, make a note of any mechanical problems with the other car.

6. Report the accident. Report the accident at a police station within 24 hours. It is illegal not to report an accident if any damage has been caused or someone has been hurt, even if neither party is intending to take legal action.  Also report the accident to your insurance company.
