Dear Reader,

We all know that sometimes it doesn’t matter if you understand health and safety rules and regulations. If your employees aren’t prepared to do the same, the best practice standards at your business will be very low anyway!

Here are nine ways you can be sure your employees will not only know their health and safety obligations, but also be fully committed to observing and enforcing them.

9 ways to get employee health and safety buy-in

  1. Be consistent on safety practices
  2. Create opportunities for employees to give suggestions for improvement

Tip: Your weekly toolbox talks are the ideal platform for this

  1. Involve employees in safety activities such as risk assessments, hazard and operability analysis and induction as a line function
  2. Implement health and safety training to ensure all your employees become competent and comply with procedures
  3. Increase incident reporting and include employees in the investigation process
  4. Hold employees accountable and give them clearly defined responsibilities
  5. Use coaching to engage employees, i.e. peer-on-peer or supervisor-on-employee or manager-on-supervisor and executive coaching for the senior managers
  6. Allow employees to make decisions around safety and feel equally responsible for safety
  7. Establish your health and safety vision as the cornerstone of frequent communication, reinforcing a consistent message throughout the year
