-    Do you spend your days putting out fires in the workplace?

Dear reader,

We’ve all heard stories of people throwing a lit cigarette out their car, and the next thing whole areas are aflame! Just look at Los Angeles and its regular infernos.

There’s no doubt, a fire is costly to your business, especially if it’s a construction site. Eliminate fire hazards with these seven tips:

Tip #1: Maintain good housekeeping habits: Ensure there’s minimal material around that can burn, e.g. paper, empty plastic bags, wood off-cuts, containers with residue of oil, petrol and other flammables.

Tip #2: Schedule regular inspections of your workplace: This will help you uncover potential sources of ignition and fire.

Tip #3: Store your flammables and other combustibles safely and correctly and you’ll significantly contribute to the prevention of fires.

Tip #4: Ensure your welding operators prevent the spread of heat through conduction and convection.

For tips #5, #6 and #7 AND sample checklists to prevent fire, and inspect your flammables store, turn to chapter C14 of your Health and Safety Advisor Handbook. . It’s an easy way to minimise the risk of fire at your company.

In the name of safety and “fire” prevention,

Christel Fouché
