Clever tricks your handyman doesn't want you to know…

Forget paying a fortune for plumbers, carpenters and general repairmen - here are 5 simple tricks for some of your most common household "complaints":
1. Leaky toilet test: Before you call in a plumber - here's how to test to see if you have a leaking toilet… Add food colouring to the toilet tank (not the toilet bowl) and don't flush for 30 minutes. If the water in the toilet bowl changes colour, you have a leaking toilet.
2. Patch up wallpaper: When patching up your wallpaper, never cut out a piece. Rather tear a piece towards the wrong side of the wallpaper. This will make the patch near-invisible.
3. Scraping doors: If a door is dragging on the floor and making terrible scraping sounds: Don't call a carpenter… Rather place sandpaper on top of a stack of paper and position the pile under the door. (Use enough paper so that the door hits the sandpaper.) Then work the door back and forth over the abrasive until enough wood is removed to stop the door from scraping.
4. Fix damaged flooring: For a gouge in vinyl flooring, shred a scrap of the vinyl with a food grater. Then mix the resulting chips with clear glue to form a paste. Next work the mixture into the crack.
5. Make paint last longer: Save a fortune on paint - here's how… When painting new plaster, or similar porous surface, paint on a solution of water mixed with PVA glue first. This will seal the surface and stop the paint from soaking into the plaster, thereby making it go a lot further and giving a much better finish.
