-    Did you receive your Statement of Earnings form by the middle of last month?

Dear reader,

Nadia, my managing editor, emailed me last week, asking for some help on behalf of her colleague Teresa. Apparently, Teresa’s husband (who owns an engineering business), received a very official, very scary looking letter from the COID Fund, demanding an amount of almost R3 000.

This was unexpected and he was confused as to why he was liable for this amount, as he dutifully paid his annual installment to the Fund, and there’d been no incidents where an employee hadn’t received compensation. In fact, Andrew didn’t have any incidents to report, never mind claim for.

Nadia wasn’t sure, so she got hold of me, and this is what I told her…

COID will bill you!

This is the way it works: Every year, a business must submit its annual income statement to COID. COID then assesses it and, based on a percentage, assesses the company for the year. This becomes your annual payment, which will change from year to year depending on your annual statement.

Did you receive your Statement of Earnings form by the middle of last month?

In January every year, the Compensation Fund will send this form to you as an employer. If you don’t receive it by the middle of February, you must follow up with the Compensation Fund.

Once you’ve received the form, you must fill it in and send it back before the end of March. You can send the form in the following three ways:

1.    Mailing it to:
PO Box 955
Pretoria
0001

2.    Faxing it to: 012 323 5433
3.    Emailing it to: info@wcomp.gov.za

Once COID has assessed your business, it will send you this bill for the year. Pay it and rest easy. You’re compliant.

In the name of safety,
