Dear reader,

It seems every other day there’s a construction fatality!

Last week Thursday IOL. co.za reported the story of a worker who was buried in a 10-metre deep trench when its walls collapsed on him. Thabo Mofokeng was found dead five hours later, standing up.

The Department of Labour is investigating the conditions under which Thabo and his colleagues to ensure they were up to code.

Did the construction company have an up-to-date health and safety file?

It could transpire that the principal contractor on Thabo’s site didn’t have an up-to-date health and safety file detailing that he’d made all the necessary appointments. If you start ANY construction project, you must open a health and safety file, and keep it on site for the duration of the project.

Your health and safety file should include the following 21 appointments…

In it you must include the 21 letters for the required appointments you should’ve made. These are:
1.    Letter of appointment of principal contractor
2.    Copy of appointment of site manager (employer)
3.    Appointment of site construction supervisor
4.    Appointment of assistant site construction supervisor
5.    Copy of appointment of health and safety auditor

For these and the 16 other appointment letters you must keep in your health and safety file, turn to C05/002 of your Health and Safety Advisor. You’re sure to avoid accidents like Thabo’s if you’ve employed everyone you should.

In the name of safety,
