Could you spend a million rand?
Earlier this week, Stuart, editor of Money Tree, gave you the second of the four steps to wealth, which is to get enough capital so you can exist at your current level on the interest you get from investing it.
Step one, to remind you, was to become entirely debt-free including your mortgage.
With enough money in the bank to exist off the interest, you're not rich, fulfilled, actualised or anything remotely like these things.
You've merely been handed your certificate of freedom by the master, and are walking away from the plantation into the unknown.
Your lifestyle is the bare minimum required for civilised existence.
Right. You’re ready for stage three. This is where you accumulate about R10 million - it varies from person to person.
Why ten million (-ish)? Well, you need about one million to make you financially independent as discussed in stage two. Then you need ten million to buy yourself lots of stupid toys so that you can get that out of your system. With ten million, most rational people will rapidly run out of ‘toys’ to buy. You’ll soon see that even with this money you have achieved NOTHING of value. All you have done is to become a free man or woman and buy yourself some toys!
Now don’t worry too much right now about how you’ll make this money. In coming weeks I’m going to give you strategies that will double or even triple your income. But first we need to come to the heart of the matter...
Why would anyone want more than R10 million?
Why does Richard Branson get up in the morning? Why does Paul McCartney keep writing songs (Please stop...)? Why doesn’t Bill Gates pack it all in? After all, they've got LOADS of money, right? Are they just greedy people who can't get enough?
No. They have all passed into stage four - the REAL point of life. The point which few people ever glimpse because most people spend a lifetime in a panic-stricken struggle to raise the money to pay the petrol bill.
I'm talking about stage four, and this is the most important stage of all. And next week I’ll tell you more about it and how to achieve it.
