Do your employees feel valued?

Dear Reader

Welcome to your last HR bulletin for the year.

Can you believe 2008 is nearly over – it really has just whizzed by! And what a year it’s been. So much has happened in the world and in South Africa, both good and bad, and things are bound to heat up even more next year. Personally, it’s been an eventful year and definitely one of my most challenging and exciting; I can’t wait to see what 2009 has to offer.

It’s the time for end of year parties and a pat on the back for those employees who’ve worked hard for you. We had a fantastic party on Friday, which I know made all of us in the FSP fold feel very appreciated. Just remember to keep things under control when the tequila starts flowing!

Make sure your employees feel appreciated

Employee recognition is extremely important to keep your employees motivated...and as I’ve said before a motivated employee is a productive one! Follow these recognition criteria to make sure you get it right:

For recognition to have the maximum desired impact, your employees must see it as:

•    Fair and just
•    Equal
•    Relative to the nature and impact of the performance
•    Transparent
•    Consistent
•    Relevant to employees
•    Relevant to the organisation
•    Aligned with your organisational objectives and values
•    Level appropriate
•    Motivational
•    Honest and entrenched in company culture

You can find more advice on employee recognition in Chapter E17 in your Practical Guide to Human Resources Handbook.

I hope it’s been a successful year for you and that we’ve helped you more than a little bit in dealing with any HR issues you might have had.

I wish you a blessed and restful break and a very happy New Year.

Until next year...
