- Fedusa calls for moratorium on retrenchments!
- Do you have an agreement in place for demoting staff?

Dear reader,

Well, this is your last bulletin until the 6th of January in the New Year. It’s been quite a rollercoaster of a year. I know I’m looking forward to the festive season, if only for the promise of plenty of good food and a few lie-ins.

On Fin24.com this morning, they reported that the US is losing 250 000 jobs a month: the largest decline in six years!

South Africa, although spared the brunt of the financial collapse most first-world countries are suffering, is also affected.

On 27 November, Business Day published a call from The Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa) for a moratorium on retrenchments, which they expect to increase as a result of the global financial crisis. Fedusa general secretary Dennis George said that, according to his federation’s affiliates, several companies in the mining, vehicle, leather and textile industries were embarking on large-scale retrenchments.

“We call on employers to place a moratorium on erratic retrenchments for the time being, so that we can first look at alternatives that would not have such a devastating socio-economic effect. Rash action can only lead to more perils for workers and the economy. It’s important that we co-construct a solution to this complex problem.”

Let’s hope they’re also subscribing to our Labour Watch Newsletter. In our next issue we deal with retrenchments, and offer alternatives to standard practices that are attractive to both you and your employees.

Here’s to a restful holiday season, and every wish for a successful 2009.

Yours sincerely,

Lucelle Buchler
Editor-in-Chief
