Dear Reader
Welcome to today’s Labour Bulletin.
Did you know that more than 74% of South Africans use the Internet to search for and apply for jobs? I did and on 1 April I started my brand new job at FSP.
When I typed in “job” on Google, it dawned on me how difficult it must’ve been in ancient times – the time before the Internet. Job searchers either had to use red markers to circle available positions in stacks of newspapers, or take an afternoon walk and hope to go by an office that had a “Help Wanted” sign in the window. More often than not, the jobs available weren't many and those businesses that were hiring didn't advertise in the paper.
Luckily the Internet changed all that. FSP posted the available position online, I found it, applied for it and the rest, as they say, is history.
I’m very excited to have joined the Personnel team and I look forward to offering you a great deal of valuable HR advice in my new position…you’ll be hearing from me often.
In today's competitive market place, it is important to broaden your recruitment method scope. While traditional advertising still plays an important role, the internet and social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are fast becoming the most popular methods to find external candidates. Online recruitment is cost effective, quick and gives you a bigger audience to select your candidates from. Why not try it for yourself next time you have a position to fill?
Find out more about the recruiting star employees in Chapter R01 of your Practical Guide to Human Recourses Management. If you are not yet a subscriber, click here to find instant, practical solutions to the HR challenges you face every day.
Until next time…
