With the amount of rain us Gautengers have had in recent months, a number of readers have written to me requesting an Insider Secrets solution to their mildew problem.

This is the best advice I found for this pesky fungus…

Mildew feeds on organic matter like fabric and leather. So, if you don’t treat it, it will eventually eat through the material… Not to mention the health hazards it presents in the form of asthma, allergies.

So here’s how to get rid of it…

Step # 1: Brush as much of the mildew off the fabric as possible – outside. Leave the curtains or garment in the sun for a couple of hours.

Step # 2: Soak the garment in cold water for a couple of hours. Then wash in warm water and detergent.

Step # 3: Dry in the sun.

If the stain hasn’t disappeared entirely, soak the garment in a solution made up of one litre of water and two tablespoons of bleach for ten minutes. For coloured garments, sponge the solution onto the stain. Rinse in warm water then was as usual.

Have your tools rusted? Here’s how to get them shining again…

Powder your rusty tools with baking soda. Then spray them with white vinegar. Now take a piece of foil and crumple it with the shiny side showing and scrub your tools. Voila, like magic, the rust will wash off!
