Dear health-savvy friend,
Going organic lowers risk of heart disease and stroke...

Research reveals you really do get higher quality nutrition from organic whole foods...
Over a period of ten years, researchers at the University of California-Davis assessed levels of two flavonoids (quercetin and kaempferol) in a large sampling of organic and conventionally grown tomatoes.
On average, the UCD team found organic tomatoes contained nearly 80% more quercetin and more than 95% more kaempferol than tomatoes grown with fertiliser and pesticides.
Flavonoids have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but fertilisation removes the need for a plant to produce flavonoids.
In a recent study, subjects who consumed more flavonoid-rich foods were less likely to suffer from a number of chronic diseases, including heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, asthma and type II diabetes.
Subjects who ate foods that provided a variety of different types of flavonoids also tended to live longer than subjects with low flavonoid intake.
Quercetin and kaempferol were the two flavonoids that stood out in the study.
Subjects who had high levels of both of these flavonoids in their diets were found to have a 21% lower risk of heart disease than those who ingested small amounts of the two. In addition, subjects with kaempferol-rich diets had 30% less chance of suffering a stroke.

An alternative to olive oil...
Question: I can't stand the taste of olive oil, but I know it's good for me. Are there any alternatives that are just as healthy?
Dr Wright: What makes olive oil such an appealing choice for many people is it doesn't oxidise as easily as other cooking oils when subjected to heat. It also has a high antioxidant content, which helps fight free radical damage in the body. But there is another oil that actually beats olive oil in both categories: Macadamia nut oil.
Macadamia nut oil can withstand significantly more heat than nearly any other cooking oil before it starts to burn and smoke. It also has significantly more antioxidant content than most other cooking oils: It contains approximately 450 parts per million vitamin E. Olive oil has approximately 100 parts per million vitamin E.
Perhaps the biggest drawback to macadamia nut oil is that it can be rather difficult to find. But you should be able to find it at good health shops. In case of difficulty, contact Health Works on 011 325 5169, they stock 250ml for R51.93.
