Dear Reader

On top of the press reports about changes in the area of labour brokers, the Minister of Labour recently said the Government may increase the period for which retrenched employees can claim unemployment insurance benefits by four months.

Currently the claims period is eight months, but he confirmed that the government intends to allow unemployed people to claim benefits from the unemployment insurance fund for a year after they lose their jobs.

The Minister also mentioned possibly extending unemployment insurance benefits to employees who had resigned from their positions. This is currently prohibited.

You need to know exactly where you stand when it comes to paying benefits! We’ll continue to monitor developments in this (and other) areas and make sure you’re the first to know if changes do occur.

Until next month...
