Have your employees got the best job in the world?

Dear Reader

Welcome to this week’s Labour Bulletin.

Just a quick introduction; for those who don’t normally get their bulletin from me, I’m the managing editor of the Labour Law for Managers Handbook and the Practical Guide to Human Resources Management Handbook. You’ll be hearing from me every four weeks and I’m looking forward to sharing valuable HR and Labour news with you.

You’ve probably read in the news that Ben Southall was given the “best job in the world” – managing a paradise island on the Great Barrier Reef. I, for one, wish he’d pack me in his suitcase! That said, while it’s not quite the same as relaxing on a tropical island, I really enjoy my job for a number of reasons (and I’m not just saying that because my boss reads my bulletins).

Don’t you also want your employees to be happy and motivated, and therefore productive? What about attracting and keeping your top talent?

Have a look at these quick tips:

1.    Identify employees who consistently do well and tell them they’re doing well. Be careful not to appear insincere or to be looking over people's shoulders.

2.    Make a list of three to five things you think motivate each of your employees. Give them the list and ask for their input. You’ll be surprised at the difference between what you thought motivates them and what really motivates them.

3.    Employees have to motivate and empower themselves. However, you can set up an environment where they can do this more easily.

4.    Focus on employee behaviours, NOT their personalities! Base performance in the workplace on goal achievement and not on employee popularity.

These are only four of them; find out what the others are in chapter M08 of your Practical Guide to Human Resources Management Handbook. Click here if you’re not already a subscriber.

Until next time...
