Dear Health-Savvy friend,
Millions of people with high blood pressure and type II diabetes are prescribed low-dose aspirin in line with medical guidelines because their doctors consider them to be at high risk of suffering a heart attack. (Diabetics are up to five times more at risk of heart disease than the general population).
This number is only going to sky-rocket in years to come, given the rise in the diagnosis of type II diabetes, which is closely linked with growing levels of obesity... So, before you or your loved ones agree to an aspirin a day, you need to know about...
Heart risk for aspirin quitters...
By Edward Martin, House Calls
Despite what you've heard, the last thing your heart needs to help it keep beating is a daily dose of aspirin.
But if you've already started on the so-called "aspirin therapy," don't stop - not right away anyway, because a new study finds that quitting could bring on a heart attack.
Researchers tracked 39,513 patients between 50 and 84 years of age who had suffered a heart attack and were taking daily aspirin in the hopes of preventing a second one.
The researchers found those who stopped their aspirin therapy were 60% more likely to suffer a heart attack over three years than those who kept taking their pills. The study found four extra heart attacks per 1,000 aspirin quitters.
The researchers say the attacks were nonfatal - but who knows what kind of hidden damage they did inside the heart, or if those second attacks set the stage for a third and possibly fatal event down the road.
The researchers concluded the benefits still outweigh the risks - but let's not get carried away here, because there are much safer ways to protect your heart.
The healthier alternative...
Studies have found that the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil can not only keep your heart beating - they can also pull off a few tricks that aspirin can't touch.
For starters, fish oil can lower your triglycerides, boost good cholesterol and reduce overall inflammation. It's also great for primary prevention, helping you to avoid that first heart attack.
Aspirin, on the other hand, is actually worse. Studies have found almost no benefit to aspirin therapy for patients who've never suffered a heart attack.
In one study, 3,350 men and women with a high risk of heart disease were given either aspirin or a placebo. Over eight years, there was no difference in heart attack or stroke risk.
There is one area, however, where aspirin manages to distinguish itself...
...Side effects.
Regular aspirin use for any reason - especially a daily dose for "therapy" - can lead to serious and potentially deadly internal bleeding problems.
Some studies have found that aspirin can increase the risk of haemorrhagic stroke - and a study just a couple of years back found that aspirin therapy causes tiny "microbleeds" in the brains of older people.

The vitamin that can help your heart beat...
By Dr Wright, Nutrition & Healing
Question: I’ve been diagnosed with having an irregular heartbeat. What can I do?
Dr Wright: One of the most common treatments for a certain type of irregular heartbeat (technically known as atrial fibrillation) is a procedure called cardioversion.
Cardioversion involves applying an electrical shock to the heart to attempt to restore a normal heart rhythm. It sounds a bit frightening, but it’s actually very safe and is often successful – at least in the short term.
The problem is, the fibrillation frequently returns – sometimes after a length of time, but sometimes quite promptly, within just a few days. And when prompt recurrences happen, it can be quite upsetting. Patients are often understandably discouraged and don’t want to undergo repeat treatment.
But recently, a group of Greek researchers reported that vitamin C – yes, that’s just “regular” vitamin C – can significantly decrease recurrence of atrial fibrillation after cardioversion treatment.
In this study, 44 individuals with this problem were “randomised” evenly to take either no vitamin C, or 2 grams of vitamin C, 12 hours before cardioversion, and then 500mg twice daily for the next seven days. Only one of the patients given vitamin C had a relapse of atrial fibrillation, while eight (36%) of the patients not given the vitamin had relapses.
The researchers also found two other positive changes in the group given vitamin C: Both their white blood cell levels and fibrinogen levels fell significantly, but neither dropped in any of the control patients. Markers of inflammation were also significantly higher among patients who had a recurrence of atrial fibrillation, compared with those who did not.
So far, there’s no longer-term follow-up to this research, but taking 2 grams (or perhaps a bit more) of vitamin C each day certainly can’t hurt – and there are many other health benefits to it as well.

This enzyme is so powerful, it sends patients with congestive heart failure into remission...
This well-researched enzyme is one of the top 10 remedies sold in Japan. It's also widely used in part of Europe. And no wonder!
It has been used as a treatment for the early stages of congestive heart failure when used in high enough dosages. It actually improves the function of the healthy part of the heart and it also slows the damaging effects of high LDL cholesterol.
And although some health-care providers are finally acknowledging its benefits, many people still haven't even heard of it. Find out all about it here...
