Hidden causes of brain fog and memory loss...
Insider Secrets | 13 October, 2010 | Hot Topics:
Dear friend,
As we get older, our brain's neurons, which carry messages from one cell to another, slow down or even die. This causes memory loss and a symptom commonly known as "brain fog".
However, in many cases, this deterioration can be prevented... And even lifted.
It's often related to a high-carbohydrate diet which results in yeast syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, glucose instability syndrome and food intolerances. These are more easily addressed...
But one reason for brain fog is often missed by doctors...
------------------------------------------------------------
Adrenal insufficiency… The “invisible” but treatable condition that most doctors don’t diagnose until it’s too late
Our adrenal glands are located on top of our kidneys. They produce many essential hormones that help regulate important functions, such as our response to stress and our blood sugar levels.
Left unchecked, prolonged periods of stress and poor diet can lead to adrenal insufficiency (AI) – also referred to as hypoadrenocorticism.
The overworked adrenal glands become underactive and eventually leave you feeling ‘burnt out’.
This can result in a range of debilitating symptoms like an inability to concentrate, excessive fatigue and weakness, nervousness, irritability, depression and insomnia.
Because these symptoms are common in a wide range of ailments, many doctors often fail to test for AI. The symptoms are often put to stress or depression instead... And antidepressants and tranquillisers prescribed for it.
These will typically offer little relief...
Most doctors are not trained to pick up early signs of AI...
Another problem is most doctors are only trained to identify the most progressive form of AI, known as Addison’s disease.
With adrenal insufficiency, the adrenals produce insufficient amounts of the ‘stress hormone’, cortisol, which helps us respond in times of stress.
Cortisol also helps the body metabolise fats, proteins and carbohydrates... It suppresses inflammatory reactions and helps maintain the proper functioning of the immune system.
In addition, adrenal insufficiency also causes your adrenals to manufacture less aldosterone – a hormone that controls sodium and potassium levels in the blood. An imbalance of these two minerals can also lower our immunity.
If you experience sugar cravings and an increased desire for salty foods, have low blood pressure, experience light-headedness, have swollen fingers or ankles (water retention) and hair loss... Ask your GP to run specific tests for AI.
