I caught my employee stealing, what must I do?

Dear Reader
Welcome to this week’s bulletin.
It’s been a busy couple of weeks at FSP; we’ve had a few people join us and I just love it when new employees start at a company I’ve been at for a while. For one, it means being able to meet new people and have fresh ideas. And it also means I definitely know more than at least one person! We all know how nerve-wracking it can be to start at a company, especially because you feel the pressure to perform exceptionally straight away.
This is where induction plays a vital role. You can’t expect your new employee to know everything about your company and his job straight away...you didn’t when you started.
Your new Practical Guide to Human Resources update covers all you need to know about induction and training new employees. Make sure you use the handy tips so your employee learns more than just where the kettle is, and can start being productive as soon as possible.
I caught my employee stealing, what must I do?
Question
I caught my employee red-handed stealing money from my wallet. She said she was just going to borrow R5 even though I’d lent her R100 an hour before. She wants to leave immediately, but I’m worried about the legal implications of this.
Should I let her leave if I get her to sign a letter stating that she agreed to leave and why?
Answer
If she wants to leave, get her to sign a resignation letter saying she chose to resign voluntarily and not because you forced her into it.
If she doesn’t resign voluntarily, you must take disciplinary action against her and, if she’s guilty of theft, dismissal is an appropriate sanction.
Until next time...
