The incredible secret to thinking differently
Insider Secrets | 8 June, 2011
I had a bit of a redesign at home this morning...

I didn’t buy anything new and there was no wallpapering, painting or re-flooring involved.
I just moved stuff around.
The bed is now on the opposite side of the room. Bookcases are against different walls. Tables, desks and chairs have all found a new position slightly different to the position they were previously in.
And do you know what’s even stranger...?
I do this almost every two months.
How come?
Well, I admit, just moving stuff around your house every couple of months sounds a bit weird.
If it doesn’t, well, let me tell you too that I also often stand in different corners of the house, try to sit at different desks in the office, even vary my route to work on a regular basis.
The reason all comes down to a personal belief I have in the effect different physical surroundings have on your thought process.
To me, one of the most important skills in business – and in life for that matter – is being able to see things from a number of different angles.
Henry Ford agrees with me...
“If there is any one secret of success,” said Ford, “it lies in the ability to get the other person’s point of view and see things from that person’s angle as well as from your own.”
I think Ford could have gone further in that statement. I think success comes from being able to see something from as many different angles as possible.
Of course, being able to see a point of discussion or disagreement from a different angle isn’t easy. That’s why we encounter so many conflicts, both big and small, in our lifetimes.
To see beyond your personal prejudices and take into account the thoughts and feelings of others not only takes practice, it requires you to use your brain in a slightly different way.
And that’s where I think regularly reorganising and reconsidering your physical surroundings can actually help...
Why physical surroundings affects your thinking
By reorganising your physical surroundings it forces you to physically see things from a different angle.
The brain is quick to learn routine and it soon starts to take things for granted...
I bet if you got home from work to find all the lights in your house had blown and everything in complete darkness, just by feeling your way around you’d be able to make it to the kitchen to find a torch or candle.
Sure, it’s a useful ability if the lights go out, but I think it makes your brain a little lazy. In my opinion it’s better to keep mixing things up to keep your brain on its toes.
You see, whether it’s laying out your furniture in a different way or talking a different route to work, it forces you to notice things you didn’t before.
It keeps your brain fresh. It gets you in the habit of looking at new things from a new angle.
And with your brain now in the habit of looking at physical surroundings differently, you can start to look at life’s problems in a fresh light too.

Start looking at things differently today
Now, I admit this all might sound a bit weird...
And as far as a concrete evidencing in science goes, my theory isn’t going to be winning the Nobel prize anytime soon.
But I really do believe that if you try this out, you’ll notice it has an effect on your mindset and the way you look at things.
Take a different route home from work, move your furniture round your house, spend the morning in a part of the office you don’t usually go near...
Just start altering your physical surroundings and forcing your brain to notice different things and your thinking about everything else will become a lot fresher too.
