Nationwide blitz inspections begin...

Inside this issue...

-    The DoL will prosecute health and safety offenders!

Dear reader,

You may have read last month about the Department of Labour’s drive to inspect all construction companies, particularly those involved in 2010 Fifa projects. This was in an effort to ensure compliance with health and safety laws. It also takes place against the backdrop of Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana’s statement that “...workers’ rights are human rights and that employers should not put profits above safety.”

Page Boikanyo said in a statement, “With construction booming, we have the duty to see to it that workers operate in safe conditions and eliminate unnecessary accidents in a proactive manner.”

The DoL will prosecute health and safety offenders!

Boikanyo added that the department’s inspection and enforcement division demands prosecution of the worst offending employers. The department would generate a database of offending employers, and also create a database of all outstanding enforcement cases.

Until next time,
