Unfortunately crime is still a very big problem in South Africa. Here are a few tips to help ensure your safety and that of your loved ones...

* Planning is crucial. Without a plan you'll hesitate and lose critical seconds that you may need to escape.

* Even if you think you're safe... ALWAYS pay attention. When a criminal sees someone is distracted, he will strike.

* Trust your instincts. If a situation makes you uncomfortable, get out fast. Your intuition is often right.

* If you're confronted by an armed person - whether you're male or female, old or young - try to escape. Don't argue or plead with your assailant. Drop your wallet or purse on the ground. Take off your watch and jewellery and set it on the floor. Then run, making as much noise as you can to attract attention.

* Carry your cell phone, and preprogram it to dial a family member or friend. Have a codeword that you both know means you're in trouble. This way if all you have time for is to dial the number and say the codeword, at least someone will know you need help, and they can contact the police on your behalf.

*  Every violent criminal says, "Do what I say, and you won't get hurt." Don't believe him. Once a criminal decides to move you, he is no longer just a robber. He has something else in mind, probably rape or murder. Do everything you can to resist him.

*  Many criminals are high on drugs or alcohol. Unless you cause severe pain, your assailant might not feel it or he might be able to withstand it. Instead of trying to kick or punch him, gouge out his eyes.

*  Don't park next to a van or between two SUVs. Before getting in your car, look under and inside both your vehicle and the one next to yours. Once in your car, immediately lock the doors, start the car and leave the area.

*  Don't be nice to strangers. We all have an inclination to help others. Criminals know this and take advantage of it. Don't let anyone stop you to ask for change, directions or the time.

In the name of safety!
