Keeping Alzheimer's Disease at bay may be easier than you thought...
According to a study presented at the International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease in Hawaii... Researchers analysed 1,200 people over 62 years and found that people who exercise either moderately or heavily, have about a 40% less chance of developing dementia...
Another study found a deficiency in vitamin D may also increase your chances of dementia later in life. In this study, British researchers examined 3,325 people aged 65 and older. Those with the lowest levels of vitamin D, were found to be the most cognitively affected (loss of memory, lack of orientation in time and space, and ability to concentrate).
5 Steps to improving your memory...
1. Pay attention. You can’t remember something if you don't acknowledge it. It takes eight seconds of focusing for our brains to process a piece of information. So, avoid multitasking when you need to concentrate. Also avoid distractions.
2. Tailor your learning style. Most people are visual learners; they learn best by reading or seeing what they have to know. Others are auditory learners. They learn better by listening. Even if you’re a visual learner, read out loud what you want to remember. And, the physical act of rewriting information can help imprint it to your brain.
3. Relate information to what you already know. Connect new information to what things you already remember. For example, use the image of a microphone to remember the name Mike, a rose for Rosie” etc. Always use positive and pleasant images because the brain naturally blocks out unpleasant ones.
4. Organise information. Write things down in address books and in your diary. Take notes on more complex material and reorganise them into logical categories later. Use both words and pictures when learning information. Arrange a long list of things into smaller units or categories. For example, arrange a telephone number by dialling code, the next three digits, the next two then the last two.
5. Be motivated and keep a positive attitude. Tell yourself you want to learn something and remember it. Telling yourself you have a bad memory actually hampers the ability of your brain to remember.
