It's relaxing (believe it or not) to do something completely different to your everyday work. Plus, you learn about the things that have always fascinated you (in my case things are old and covered in cobwebs!). And of course, you ultimately increase your earning power.

How does it work?

Online learning is slightly different to the traditional long-distance education offered by groups like Unisa, in that you attend classes by watching a video feed over the Internet. Classes may be live or might take the form of a stored file, which can be downloaded.

Obviously, you need to begin online. Most websites offering accredited courses are extremely user-friendly and will guide you through the entire process, from determining whether you are eligible, to course content, to payment options.

Avoid expensive mistakes – ask these questions FIRST

* Is this institution accredited? If so, by whom and where?
* Will a South African Matric exemption be acceptable for admission?
* Are there any additional entrance requirements?
* What computer requirements will be necessary?
* Is the course 100% online, or is some attendance required?
