Dear fellow tax payer,

It’s official: the year’s in full swing, everyone’s back at work (as evidenced by the extreme hike in the traffic on the roads).

SARS extends eFiling deadline!

I know I warned you last week about the 23 January deadline for filing your tax returns via eFiling. SARS has now stated it will complete and capture returns electronically at any of its offices until this initial deadline, but tax payers now have until 5 February to submit their returns through eFiling. This doesn’t mean you’ve got oodles of time still: the 5th of February is less than three weeks away!

SARS issues new Vat guide

On the 9th of December last year, SARS announced the issue of a very useful guide (Vat 409) on the Vat treatment for fixed property and construction transactions. It’s also about time: SARS published the previous version of this guide in 1991, and since then a fair number of amendments to the Vat Act have taken place.

The guide is fairly broad and is important reading for you if you’re involved with the financial aspects of fixed property and construction, but it doesn’t deal with all the legal details associated with Vat so you shouldn’t refer to it for legal clarification. SARS has also tried to avoid technical and legal jargon wherever it can.

Visit the SARS website (www.sars.co.za) to download the guide in full. You’ll find it under the “What’s new” tab.
