Those Internet people are very clever!

Dear Reader

Welcome to this week’s bulletin.

I love the Internet! I really do. If I need to clarify what a word means or find out more about the latest HR issues, there are endless resources to give me answers. Even that “not very well-known Indie movie star who acted in that one movie in the 90s” will be there somewhere! The idea that we can access even the most random information at the click of a button fascinates me.

I always thought those people who develop websites have to be very clever. Now I know...they are. I know a few of them. They work in my office and have certainly proven themselves in developing our new FSP website! It’s easy to use, informative and looks great too. It’s launching on the 1 April and I recommend you check it out. I’ll send you the URL as soon as the site goes live.

Q&A from our subscribers

Can an employee go on holiday during sick leave?

Question
Can an employee take all the 30 days sick leave he’s entitled to at once (i.e. one month) and then go on a vacation during that sick leave period.

Answer
Sick leave can be taken at once if the employee is ill or injured during the entire sick leave period and is unable to work as a result thereof, except in the first six months of employment.

If he’s not ill or injured and able to work, then such days (e.g. the days he goes on vacation) may not be considered as paid sick leave days. Take up the issue with the employee and if he wasn’t ill, you can either consider the days as unpaid leave or paid annual leave (with his consent) or discipline him for claiming sick leave under false pretences.

Until next time...
