SARS has FINALLY published the new list of qualifying medical expenses
We told you some time ago that SARS was updating its definition of “disability’, and has expanded the list of medical expenses that qualify for tax deductions. At last, SARS has released the list of qualifying expenses, and the new form that taxpayers have to fill in to make claims – the ITR-DD.
This is wonderful news for us taxpayers, who can finally claim back tax on medical expenses and get much-needed tax relief, where it counts. Of course, SARS is going to be keeping a very close eye on your claims. And it’s quick to hand out penalties to taxpayers who try to abuse the system.
In SARS’ dictionary, “disability” is…
First off, SARS defines a disability as any impairment to body or mind, which results in a moderate to severe limitation on the ability to perform daily functions. And you’ll have to prove that this is indeed the case, if you’re trying to claim your medical deductions.
How does SARS classify the different disabilities?
Now, SARS differentiates between a permanent disability (as in the case of someone who has cerebral palsy, for example), and a temporary disability. Remember that even a temporary disability HAS to limit your performance of daily functions, to qualify for a claim.
For more information about the new qualifying expenses, who can claim, and the requirements SARS has set out, make sure you read the May Tax Watch newsletter. We’ve covered all the details.
