- Your employees can sleep on the job!

Dear reader,

My fiancé recently introduced me to crime writer Ian Rankin and I’ve just been lapping the books up! But, this hasn’t distracted me from my daily task of keeping a beady eye on the newspapers and I’m pleased to say in the last week I haven’t seen any reports of fatalities in industry.

Now, I realise this doesn’t necessarily mean nothing’s happened, but I would optimistically like to think no news is good news!

We recently had a very interesting question from Sharon Nadarajan, one of our subscribers, and I’ve decided to share it (and the answer) with you all…

Your employees can sleep on the job!

Question

Am I allowed to let my employees sleep on company premises? If I am, what am I obliged to provide?

Answer

Company premises are private property and you or your management may allow your employees to sleep on site.

It may be a problem though because the property is demarcated as an industrial area, but there isn’t any formal legislation regarding this.

If you do allow your employees to sleep on the premises, you must have sufficient facilities available as part of this lodging i.e. toilets and showers as well as food preparation areas.  You should also keep the area private, separate from the work area.

You and your employee should also agree on any security matters.

Most important is ensuring the lodgings are well away from any hazardous exposure i.e. chemicals and noise.

No prizes for guessing what I’ll be doing during lunch and, yes, it has everything to do with a certain Scottish author!

Stay safe,

Nadia Pisanti
