The big news this week is the change in taxation of medical aid contributions. From March 2010, the cap amounts no longer apply when calculating income tax fringe benefits, and in particular, the tax on the employer’s contribution.

The story of Ozzy Osbourne biting the head off a live bat at a concert has to be one of the most notorious stories in Rock ‘n Roll (and this is quite achievement for a music genre that literally delights in this kind of behaviour).

I don’t want to bore you with the finer details of Mr Gordhan’s recent budget speech. But I do want to highlight five of the things he mentioned, because they’ll mean higher taxes for you and me.

I was very pleased with your vociferous response to my question in last week’s bulletin. Surprisingly, there wasn’t the expected unanimous “YES” when I asked whether we should do what New Zealand is planning, and ban smoking completely. I wanted to share everyone’s comments, and a few readers very kindly gave permission for us to reproduce what they had to say here…

Tracy King is normally ‘behind the scenes’ in our department, but I think, with her knowledge of labour law (and her ability to keep her finger on the pulse of things), she’s the perfect editor for the Labour Watch newsletter. And so, she takes over from the next issue, heading up our team of experts on the Labour Team.

I caught last week’s episode of Carte Blanche Consumer, which highlighted the fact that filing taxes is still a nightmare for many South African taxpayers. The biggest complaint was that SARS employees are incompetent, and it’s near impossible to get help on tax issues.

You should have received your first health and safety update for this year. You’ll see we’ve included the very important amendments Government made to the Tobacco Products Control Act on the 21st of August last year. There’ve been some very interesting (and prohibitive) developments!

I had book club last night (I use the term loosely, because discussing books isn’t a big part of it), and my friend, Chloe, told me about an issue she was having at work. She’s pretty senior in her company, and manages quite a big team. But, as I found out, the perks of her well-paying job don’t necessarily outweigh the problems!

Turnover tax is a relatively new tax (it’s only been available to small businesses in South Africa for about a year). SARS implemented this new tax system to try and reduce the administrative burden on small businesses in South Africa.

Do you remember the explosion that occurred at the Bloed Street Mall last month? A recent investigation into the incident revealed that liquid petroleum gas (LPG) escaped from the gas line, causing the explosion. At least seven people were injured during the blast, and the damages cost an estimated R400 000.  Human error was to blame…

Wow! Who knew learning about management could be so interesting. I’m doing HR at the moment, and we have a phenomenal lecturer (I’m working on him to be a part of our upcoming seminars), and he’s full of entertaining anecdotes about his work experience. I know you’re probably thinking, “whatever!” but I’m not kidding when I say he literally had us on the edge of our seats on Monday night, telling us a true story about a big South African company. We’d run 15 minutes over the lecture time and none of us wanted to leave until he finished his story...

This past week, SARS announced that it’s expanded its definition of the term ‘handicap’ (with effect from 1 March 2009). People with disabilities (or those who care for them) will be able to claim significant tax deductions on their medical expenses.

You know the saying, “a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing”? In health and safety, this is sometimes scarily applicable. For instance, you know that it’s good business practice to conduct an audit once a year, so you faithfully do this annually.
