“R14,532.70 For a Five-Hour Week, Anyone?”
One day in 1995 Pamela Wesley, an avid collector of Pez sweet dispensers, mentioned to her husband-to-be Pierre Omidyar, that she quite fancied increasing her collection by buying over the internet.
His interest aroused, Omidyar set up an online auction site where buyers and sellers of all sorts of collectible items could meet and do business. The site was called eBay and in January it announced last year’s profits came to $1.78 billion. Revenue totaled $8.54 billion.
Get Ready To Fire Your Boss!
So why should this be of any interest to you? I’ll tell you why… Because, with the introduction of PayPal by FNB, eBay has finally, properly launched in South Africa! Now you’re not restricted to only buying and selling in the local market.
This couldn’t have happened at a better time. I’ll explain why in a moment. But first let me bring you up to speed on what we’ve been missing out on by not having the world’s largest auction site at our finger tips.
‘How Ordinary People Are Making A Killing From Their Kitchen Table’
Many of eBay's users are making LARGE sums of money. They have managed to catapult themselves to success by learning the simple steps which I’ll be sharing with you in a moment. Old and young are raking in more money than they ever did in their day jobs, regardless of their level of education, experience or computer knowledge.
After all, making a fantastic living on eBay requires:
» No stress
» No overheads
» No staff
» No office
» No shop premises
» No large investment
» And No bother!
It doesn’t matter what the economic climate is doing, eBay sellers always make a bundle of cash.
While the website may look like a huge, virtual garage sale where you can cast off moth-eaten jerseys and old records for a bit of extra pocket money, some 1.3 million people around the world are making a full time living auctioning products on eBay, while only working part time hours.
These people are known as "Powersellers", trading everything from diet pills and doll's houses to cars and computers.
It may seem like an uncertain way to make a living but, as Fiona Jennings, the Communications Manager of eBay, explains: "If you are a bicycle dealer in Port Elizabeth and set up a shop on the main street, you are only going to reach customers locally.
On eBay, you're selling to millions of people a day across the world. And people do buy from the site - they like the excitement of bidding, and of receiving the package at home, complete with a little note from the seller. And you know that whatever you're auctioning, someone will purchase it."
Recently I came across an article in The Daily Telegraph, one of the oldest and most respected newspapers in Great Britain. It was showcasing a small selection of real people who are making a real living while only working a few hours a week.
Take a moment to read these case studies as this gives you a glimpse into the kind of success you can enjoy while working from home:
Case study #1
Oliver Goehler: Rare Advertising Books
When Oliver Goehler completed his Masters in management last summer, his intention was to get a job in advertising, but he found it more difficult than he had expected. "I was flat broke, with huge student debts, and I needed to make some money fast", says the 23-year-old.
He remembered that, while at university, he had sold a few of his advertising text books on eBay to fund nights out. So he dug out another book - which he had bought for R725 - put it on eBay, and sold it for R1,961.90. "And I suddenly realised you could make real money from auctioning items on the site".
Goehler now makes about R14,532.70 a week selling rare advertising books on eBay, and only works for around two hours a day. "I think my friends are envious, although I don't really like to boast to them. It would seem a bit rude to suddenly announce:
"I only bothered to work for five hours last week and I raked in almost as much as you make in a month in your full time job!"
He puts his success down to trading in a niche market that he knows well. "I source general booksellers and they have no idea that this old marketing book they are selling for R43 is worth R80".
His most successful sale was a book he bought for R305 and sold on for R2,318.95!
Sneakily, he scours eBay itself for clueless sellers auctioning books without any idea of their real value - people who may have found them in a garage and stuck them on the site to make some extra money. "I'll buy them for the asking price and then sell them on again for their proper worth". Does he have any tips for potential “Powersellers”?
"Concentrate on something you are interested in, because you need to know your market in order to get good prices. And list your products effectively with key words to make sure that they are seen by a wider audience".
He says that, despite this all-encompassing knowledge of eBay, he is not addicted. "I don't think about it constantly and I can easily go without it for a few days", he says.
And will he, perhaps, be looking for a proper job at some point?
"I sometimes think about it, but why would I work a nine to five day for a fraction of the money I'm making now? With eBay, You can make a big chunk of cash without having to make a big amount of effort".
Case study #2:
George Crudgington: Toy Soldiers and Figurines
George Crudgington and his partner, Joyce Bailey, describe themselves as "mature citizens" (Crudgington admits to being 73, but Bailey would rather not divulge her age).
They are not, perhaps, the sort of people you would expect to be running a business on the worldwide web, and yet, by selling ceramic figurines, toy soldiers and stamps solely through eBay, they have built up a company with an annual turnover of R2,180,000.
Crudgington and Bailey's eBay adventure started about five years ago, when they were both retrenched. Without a pension, money was tight. "I had heard about eBay and decided to sell some of my old first-day cover stamps that I had lying around in my drawers", says George.
"They sold really easily, especially some Princess Diana ones which went like hotcakes to the States. So I dug out some of my old toy soldiers and they, too, flew off the site. Joyce had an interest in ceramics, so we began to sell them."
“We realised how easy it was and from there it progressed to an annual turnover of R2,180,000!"
The couple are now official stockists of Royal Doulton and Wedgwood, despite the fact that their company trades only through the auction site. They make 28% net profit and host seminars for other mature citizens, giving them advice on how to get into online business.
"When I'm in the supermarket and I see a senior citizen sweeping the floors for money, it makes me angry – I know they could be doing better if they had a bit of help", says George.
"It's no idle boast when I say that people could be running a business within 10 days of starting trading on eBay".
"You don't need vast sums of money - just an interest in whatever you are selling - and there aren't any real overheads. We have a couple of stockrooms, and we don't have to spend money on packaging. With eBay, you can send items off in boxes from the supermarket".
But what would they do if eBay went bust? "In the unlikely event of that happening", smiles George, "we would retire to the second home in France we have just bought thanks to the money we have earned".
Case study #3:
Catherine Gilbert: Clothes to the US and UK
Catherine Gilbert admits that she is more than a little addicted to eBay.
"I look at it every day, and then I have to limit myself, otherwise I'd spend all day on it", says the 33-year-old. "When I go on holiday, I miss it".
She first looked at eBay a year and a half ago: "I am a real shopaholic. I logged on and couldn't believe how much stuff there was on there to buy. Then I realised that if I bought things I didn't actually want, I could sell them on again on the site and people would often pay more for them as they got carried away with the excitement of bidding".
Shortly afterwards, she was browsing eBay for Harry Potter merchandise to buy for her children, and noticed that American users were bidding big money for a scarf featuring the character. "So I went out and bought a few, put them on eBay, and was doubling my money every time. One man even offered to pay $103,57 (R725) more to get one shipped to the States extra quick".
Gilbert soon realised the potential of selling things to one country that were only available in another - most notably, the hip American fashion brand Abercrombie and Fitch.
"I would buy their T-shirts from eBay.com and then sell them on eBay.co.uk for twice the price. I had people bidding €65.90 (R725) for what is a €26.36 (R290) T-shirt, and €26.36 (R290) for some €9 (R86) hats. If I can do this, anyone can!"
"I don't trade on eBay full time, but saying that, I have to work only two days a week in a bank thanks to my earnings on the site. It more than covers all the extras like clothes and shopping".
‘How To Make A Fortune From Selling Broken Glass On eBay!’
People often ask me what can they do to make money on eBay. Quite often I’ll just find out what interests they have, as this is often the key to unlocking massive success. One example is a lady I know called Michelle. Michelle sells broken glass on eBay.
I’m going to explain how she does this.
She goes to the local thrift shop and she buys plates that are very colourful. Some have flower patterns or bright colours.
She brings them back to her house and she cuts them up into little squares using special cutters. Occasionally she’ll cut the flowers into shapes. In total she spends a couple of hours getting them ready to sell.
Now comes the really easy part. She sells them to people on eBay who do mosaic tile work.
‘How You Can Turn a Couple of Rands Into BIG Money on eBay!’
She will typically spend R50 for a plate. However, once she’s cut it up into little pieces she’ll then go on and sell it for around R300 to R350! And it’s only taken her a couple of hours to prepare!
‘Turning Rubbish into Riches!’
One last example I want to give you shows us how you don’t actually need to be creative or artistic to make piles of cash on eBay. A friend of mine called John always used to ask me what he could sell on eBay. After all, many of his friends were making money on eBay, so why couldn’t he?!
Now John’s a good friend of mine and I’ll be the first to admit that he isn’t very entrepreneurial. That’s not an insult, it’s just that some people aren’t very good at spotting opportunities.
For a living, John works in a large hotel fixing and maintaining their furniture. He does all the woodwork – the chairs, tables, doors and such. At home, he has a really nice woodworking shop. One of the machines he has is called a Shopsmith.
Shopsmith is a high-end woodworking tool. It’s a really cool machine that you can attach different tools to depending on what job you’re doing.
It’s a retrofit system. You buy the base to get started and then you buy separate pieces to give it more capability. It’s got quite a following.
One day I was at his house and John asked the question he always asked me, "What can I sell on eBay?"
Pointing at some stuff of the floor I asked "Well, what’s that?"
He said, "They are old legs from my Shopsmith".
I said, "Well, let’s try selling these on eBay".
He sold them all on eBay and got almost R400 for them. He couldn’t believe it. He was so excited when he told me: "I was going to throw them out. And I got R400 for it! I got a lot of Shopsmith stuff".
We then looked up Shopsmith on eBay and saw all sorts of things listed. In a nutshell, John started selling his own spare Shopsmith gear. After a while he ran out of his own stuff lying around. However, by this time he was seriously bitten by the eBay bug.
Would This Be Worth Your While In Exchange For A Convertible Sports Car!
I suggested the idea of putting an ad in the local classifieds saying: ‘I Buy Shopsmith Equipment. Give Me A Call.’
He put it in the local paper. Normally, the ads are free or very low cost. In response he got a couple of phone calls from people who were looking to sell.
Typically John will pay R8,000 for it. He’ll pull the pieces apart and normally he’ll make around R25,000 to R30,000 per unit. He runs the ad once in a while and he gets a machine every couple of months. It puts some extra spending money in his pocket. In fact he has just bought a BMW convertible with the extra money he’s made!
However, you need to know the insider secrets that make you stand out from all the other sellers on eBay. If you know what you’re doing you can really clean up and laugh your way all to the bank.
